Analysis On Final Ransomware
Final Ransomware was firstly spotted by the cyber security researchers in April 2017. It is based on the GX40 Ransomware, which is itself a modified version of Hidden Tear, an open source ransomware. The Ransomware is being distributed by a hacking group based in Indonesia and is designed to mostly attack computer users in English speaking regions. It is especially effective in attacking computers with the Windows 10, 7, Vista. After installation, the malware contacts its Command and Control servers and carries out its attack. Final Ransomware encrypts all stored files by using a combination of the AES and RSA encryptions. It targeted a large variety of file types including media, video, audio, images, texts, and documents, in its attack. During the encryption process, the Ransomware add the file extension '.encryption' to the end of the file name.
Final Ransomware will avoid certain directories, such as Program Data and Windows, to ensure that the victim's computer remains functional enough to deliver a ransom note and carry out the ransom payment from the victim. A ransom note may appear on the desktop after encryption procedure which says that “YOUR PERSONAL FILES HAS BEEN ENCRYPTED” and encourages to contact “email@example.com”. It is strongly advised to victim never contact on this email address because the victim may be redirected to the TOR Network. Additionally, it also delete the Shadow Volume Copies, which can be used to recover the files in the event of an emergency.
